Three days after a Noida youth opened fire at protests in Delhi's Jamia Milia Islamia, unidentified gunmen once again fired shots around the university.
According to reports, the incident of firing was reported near Gate number 5 of Jamia Millia Islamia. Locals say two men came on a scooty and fired shots in the air and fled the scene. No casualties have been reported so far.
A statement issued by the Jamia Coordination Committee, a group comprising students and alumni of the varsity, said the attackers were on a red scooter.
No one was injured in the attack. One of the miscreants was wearing a red jacket, the statement said.
The incident comes hours after an angry mob descended on the Shaheen Bagh in a bid to get the road cleared. On Sunday morning, a large group of locals and protesters gathered around the Shaheen Bagh sit-in protest site demanding the protesters to vacate the jammed road. The protesters also raised slogans of Vande Mataram and the provocative "desh ke gaddaron ko, goli maaro s****n ko".
Delhi Police detained some of the protesters who were agitating against the Shaheen Bagh protest and moved them to a different location.
This is the fourth incident of provocation in the past one week in the Jamia-Shaheen Bagh area. A teenager, on January 30, fired at a group protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) outside the Jamia Millia Islamia University, injuring a student.
Two days later, a gunman opened fire at Shaheen Bagh, which has emerged as the epicentre of anti-CAA protests and where hundreds have been staging a sit-in for almost two months now.
No one was injured in the firing and the gunman was immediately taken into custody.
Before that, an armed man entered the protest area at Shaheen Bagh on Tuesday and threatened the anti-CAA agitators there.
Owing to the rising incidents of violence in the area, the Election Commission on Sunday shunted out Delhi's southeast DCP Chinmoy Biswal citing the "ongoing situation" in the area. The poll body directed Additional DCP (southeast) Kumar Gyanesh to take charge.
Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer Ranbir Singh had visited the Shaheen Bagh area on Sunday morning for an assessment.
